PANTHEON-SORBONNE

Paris University 1 (Pantheon-Sorbonne) is one of Paris' most respected universities. The university is spread across Paris, giving you several Paris letting options for living nearby.

The vast nature of Paris' largest university means there are apartments in Paris that can help you live near whichever part of the educational system you'll be calling your own. A long term Paris rental makes it possible for you to attend classes or teach in Paris in a way that's convenient, economical, and most of all adds charm and fun to your daily routine. You can have a look on our choice of apartment rentals in Pantheon area.

Paris 1 was once a part of the single University of Paris, later divided into several universities. Around 40,000 students are enrolled 14 departments (for both teaching and research, called Unités de Formation et de Recherche) and 5 institutes. The institutes offer high-level degree classes in political science, law, management, economics and in the humanities. In fact, University Paris 1 has France's largest humanities and social sciences offerings.

Although the university is spread among various centers of learning throughout Paris, the main hubs of activity are the Sorbonne and other prestigious university areas. As such, Paris 1 is at the epicenter of a vibrant matrix of international learning that spans five continents. Paris 1 is at the vanguard of education in training academics, researchers, legal professionals, management, and some of Paris' top civil servants.

In terms of staff, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne has more than 1,000 faculty, and 200 researchers affiliated with major research institutions, principally the National Centre for Scientific Research (the CNRS). More than 100 administrative and technical staff are divided into 68 research teams for the Ministry of Education and Research and National Centre.

Some other statistics serve to show the breadth of the university. (Fortunately, your Paris apartment rental Pantheon-Sorbonne makes it easy for you to live near your particular niche.) Each year, approximately 400 students defend PhD theses, and almost 2,000 post-graduate degrees are awarded in 74 subjects from 15 graduate schools.

The name "Pantheon-Sorbonne" refers to the Sorbonne, which is traditionally the seat of humanities studies in Paris. As a result, "Sorbonne" is also included in the names of the other humanities universities, Paris III and IV. The "Pantheon" part of the name refers to the legal coursework offerings, as the Place du Panthéon building is the home of law studies. (The name is also used by Paris II, which also specializes in law.) Economics coursework was traditionally taught by legal faculty, and as a result there is no official seat for economics education.

The three major tracks for students are economics and management, humanities and law and political science. From these three main families spring coursework in everything from math and computer science to archaeology, the arts, social law, and much more in between.

Research is still a big part of Paris 1, and the university continues to sit at the vanguard of research in international relations, European studies, communications and management. Programs in research span economics, political science and law, applied mathematics, sociology and many others.

Archival holdings of the Paris 1 are vast. One of the largest document collections in France is located here. In addition, the library in the Sorbonne is the repository of around 3 million books, with 100,000 more than 200 years old. Almost 18,000 periodicals covering every dimension of the humanities can also be found here. There are specialized libraries holding 400,000 volumes, making it one of the largest collections in Europe. And the collection of old maps in the Geographical Institute are the oldest in all of France.

500 data banks exist in the Cujas Library, which is also a part of Paris II, and is the largest economics and legal library in France.

Paris 1 has an active international network as well. More than 150 conventions have been signed with foreign universities on 5 continents. International students, numbering at around 6,000, study at Paris 1 in conjunction with programs such as TEMPUS and SOCRATES. Western and Eastern Europe represent the largest point of origin for these students, but increasing numbers of students from Africa, the Americas and Asia have been coming to enrich the student mix at Paris 1.

The highly mobile staff gives the university yet another unique aspect. Each year more than 100 faculty from universities overseas come to Paris 1 to teach and conduct research. International research is of great importance at the university. Many of the university's staff go abroad to participate in groundbreaking international research projects, and participate in numerous international conferences.
