The Latin Quarter is a wonderful place. Read on to find out more about this amazing part of town!
When you're ready spend your vacation in one of the most energetic and intellectually stimulating parts of Paris, Paristay has the Paris apartments you need to make your trip truly exciting and memorable …
The Latin Quarter is a lively, historical, and bistro-filled part of the city that spans part of the 5th and 6th arrondissements on the Left Bank, from the beautiful Saint-Germain-des-Prés to the magnificent gardens of Luxembourg.
The district gets its name from the Latin language, which was widely spoken by the scholars who inhabited the area in the Middle Ages. Although in modern times Latin has been replaced by the languages of the many international students who frequent the area, the Latin Quarter remains a vibrant center of learning and student activity, home to a number of higher education establishments, such as the Sorbonne, the Beaux Arts, École Normale Supérieure, the École des Mines de Paris and Jussieu University, among others. In addition to students, many academics, journalists and writers live here.
For an intellectual outing, stroll the Sainte-Geneviève Library (home to two million volumes). Or hit the numerous area bookshops, specializing in new, rare and antique books: history, poetry, philosophy and more. You will find many things are within walking distance of your short term Paris rental in the Latin Quarter.
In addition to local churches, be sure to see the oldest Paris monuments : the Arenas of Lutèce (Roman ruins), the Roman thermal baths, the mountain Sainte-Geneviève, and the place Saint Michel.
Lovers of the Middle Ages shouldn't miss the Hotel de Cluny (the National Museum of the Middle Ages). And no trip to the Latin Quarter would be complete without a visit to the breathtaking Pantheon: originally built as a church dedicated to St. Genevieve, and now the famous burial place of such luminaries as Victor Hugo, Emile Zola and others.
For one of Paris' most beautiful parks, don't forgot the beautiful Luxembourg Gardens. The Jardin du Luxembourg is the largest public park in the city and the garden of the French Senate, which is itself housed in the Luxembourg Palace. The gardens include a large fenced-in playground, a puppet theatre and a merry-go-round. Pony rides are also occasionally available. Free musical performances are presented in a gazebo on the grounds and there is seating under the trees, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Enjoy some music over a glass of wine.
Those visiting Paris in June will also be able to see an open-air opera (www.operaenpleinair.com).
The eastern end of the Latin Quarter is only a footfall away from the Seine, and the islands that grace the center of Paris, the Île de la Cité and the Île Saint-Louis, and the world-famous Notre Dame. A trip to the Right Bank is as easy as crossing the bridge over the Seine. Renting from a selection of Paris apartment rentals Latin quarter makes all the difference!
If you have a little energy remaining in the evening, you'll find bistros on every corner, to accommodate every taste and budget. Lose yourself strolling along the Seine or the Boulevard Saint Germain, or head to the rue Mouffetard to discover the pubs there.
For those in need of a little relaxation, kick back in one of the move theatres of the district (many films with the original English soundtrack) and for art lovers we recommend the Cinema of the Pantheon: one of oldest theatres in operation. If you move in direction of seventh district, stop at the theatre of Odéon. This theatre was initially created to accommodate French comedy.
Night-owls and lovers of amateur jazz shouldn't miss the very well-known Caveau de la Huchette (www.caveaudelahuchette.fr). Lovers of variety and revue performances will want to go to the Paradis Latin Cabaret. You can have a fantastic Paris by night in this quarter.
